Tylenol or TV for pain?

According to this report in the BBC, watching television can can numb pain and act as a natural painkiller for children

Children who were given no distraction at all registered pain scores around three times higher than those who watched cartoons.

Even a mother’s attempts at distraction, for example by soothing or caressing the child, proved to be no match for the soothing effect of television.

The results suggested that, not only did watching television reduce levels of pain, it also improved children’s tolerance of the pain they did register, the team said.

No need for me to feel guilty about my kids watching television anymore. Next time, the kids complain of aches and pains I’ll leave the TV set on for a little more time instead of dosing them with medication 🙂

  1. WOW, Never heard of that but now that you think about it, when you sit a kid in front of the TV… their eyes do kind of glaze over, huh?

I better not share this with my 6yo – he will opt to watch the Fairly Odd Parents ALL DAY Claiming it is good for his health 🙂
