According to this study, raising kids will be a lifelong challenge to your mental health.
All parents, whether they be of minor or adult children reported more depression than non parents. Not only do parents have significantly higher levels of depression than adults who do not have children, the problem gets worse when the kids move out. The effect of parenthood was the same on men or women.
I do tend to agree with the researcher that it is hard to be a parent since we don’t get much help and have to do it in relative isolation.
Parenting is definitely a tough job – but not a depressing job.
My kids give me a headache, make me shout, drive me crazy and don’t give me any time to do anything but at the end of the day, they wipe away a day’s worth of tantrums and whining with their smiles and hugs.
Depressing – NO !
Mentally uplifting – definitely !
